Bedsores are also called pressure sores and decubitus ulcers. They are caused by constant pressure on bony areas of the body, which decreases blood flow to these areas, and most often occur in the tailbone area.
Bedsores are preventable. Nursing homes are obligated to identify residents who are at risk for bedsores. The most common causes are immobility, vascular disease, and diabetes.
If a resident enters a nursing home without bedsores and bedsores develop, the nursing home should be held responsible. If a resident has bedsores when admitted to a nursing home, the nursing home must ensure that it is properly treated and does not worsen. Regular bathing is also important in preventing and treating bedsores. Severe bedsores can lead to infection and sepsis.
If someone in your family has developed bedsores while in the care of a nursing home, please call us at (414) 271-4262.
